Nieuwsbrief/Newsletter 03-2021
Dear Teiresians,
Another month in lockdown is over. As a result, we have now arrived well into the last half of this academic year. We have had a great time so far at all events of the past six months, so we are also looking forward to the upcoming events that are in this newsletter! In addition to these events, we are busy organizing a symposium series in collaboration with the teachers and the UU, with the working title “New Discoveries”. In this series, historians and people engaged in popular history (films, books) will talk about their work on new and groundbreaking projects. We keep you informed of the developments within this project but wanted to make you a bit tasty! In the meantime, here are the events of the coming period:
March 18, The Past at Play, from 3:15 p.m.
VALUE Foundation (https://value-foundation.org/) will give a presentation for the Digital Humanities course of Dr. Ortal-Paz Saar’s. The VALUE Foundation is engaged in enabling research at the crossroads between gaming and science, trying to approach it as accessible as possible. Games are played by a huge number of people and contain more often than not a representation of a past. In this lecture we try to find out how historical research can be carried out within the framework of games, what questions to ask and finally a case study is presented! For this purpose, the way in which different cultures are depicted in the grand-strategy game Imperator: Rome is viewed. Use this link to watch!
23 maart: meet and greet Q&A (20:00)
Together with the student assistants of the BA program history, we have set up a meet & greet. The aim is that they can ask more experienced students about their choices and experiences during their academic careers. Some of you have already indicated that you want to participate in this, but if you think now, I want to be there, do not hesitate to contact one of us.
April 8, at 5 p.m., the Student Symposium
This event will only be accessible to students, because this way we can best help each other in relaxed conditions, so that more consultation can take place. It is an opportunity for bachelor and master students who are interested in antiquity, the Middle Ages or the Renaissance to present their work to others. It is also the perfect opportunity to discuss your own or their work with fellow students. Via this link you can join the 8th!
6 May, Interclassical Symposium
Nice and early, but keep the day free in your calendar! The annual Interclassical symposium will be held online this year. Fortunately, some great speakers have already promised to speak this year! They will all talk about the theme “Believing Myth”. On behalf of Utrecht, our own dr. Janric van Rookhuijzen will talk about the myth of Athena & Poseidon, who fought for the hegemony about Athens! The link to this event will be shared with you sometime in the coming weeks. We are already very much looking forward to it!
